[Germany] Postdoctoral Fellow in Large Scale Microfluidic Cell and Virus Screening

Application Deadline : 31 January 2012

Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organizations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany) and the outstations are in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).
Applications are invited for a post-doc position in the group of Dr. Christoph Merten, using cutting-edge microfluidic technology to address fundamental biological questions. In particular, we are looking for a candidate working on large scale characterization and optimization of HIV vaccine candidates (in collaboration with the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative) and/or the screening of therapeutic antibodies. Other projects in the lab focus on systems in which cellular pathways (e.g. involved in cellular senescence and stem cell differentiation) are pertubated with thousands of drugs (and combinations thereof) to derive interaction maps and identify novel factors. Making use of microfluidic technology these studies can be carried out on the single virus / single cell level at ultra high throughput (up to a million samples can be assayed per hour). Furthermore, the tiny assay volumes allow the use of samples that are hardly available in big quantities (e.g. primary human cells, stem cells, etc.).

Qualifications and Experience

We are looking for outstanding applicants holding a university degree in cell biology or virology. Prior experience in microfluidics, automated image analysis and bioinformnatics is advantageous but not absolutely required.
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is an international, multidisciplinary institute. The working language is English.
