Research Position: Applying Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis in Environmental Engineering (Postdoc or MS)

Application Deadline : 3, January 2012

The position is part of the running transdisciplinary project "Sustainable Water Infrastructure Planning” (SWIP) of the National Research Program "Sustainable Water Management” (NRP 61). The successful candidate will be part of a team of senior scientists and two PhD students that are developing a novel integrated, participatory planning procedure for municipal water infrastructures. SWIP focuses on dealing with limited data, the uncertainty of future developments, and ensuring high acceptance of the decision-making process by stakeholders.
The project combines engineering with decision sciences. The focus of this position is to carry out an exemplary Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) to support wastewater infrastructure planning under uncertain future scenarios. The approach is applied to a running case study in Switzerland. Specifically, the tasks are to carry out interviews for preference elicitation with different stakeholders, to collect expert data for predictions, to combine and analyze these data with MAUT using R with a special focus on uncertainty, to discuss the results in a stakeholder workshop, and to write a scientific publication.
The candidate for this position is ideally expected to hold a PhD degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Economics or similar with a strong interest in the science-society interface. He or she should have experience with MCDA, skills in modelling (preferably R) and mathematical applications as well as the capability to elicit stakeholder values. For this collaboration with municipalities and utilities, fluency in German is an important asset as well as a background in urban water management. Additionally, we require the skills and willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team. It is also possible to apply with a MS degree, given the necessary profile.
The position starts in spring 2012 for a duration of one year. For further information, please consult http://www.eawag.ch/, http://www.nfp61.ch/,
