[Germany] PhD Student Position – Metaproteomics and Metabolomics

Application Deadline : 30.01.2012

The Department of Proteomics at the UFZ – Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research GmbH is offering a position for three years within the DFG SPP1319 project ‘Transformation of hydrocarbons in the absence of molecular oxygen: From the global to the molecular scale’ for a
PhD position (m/f) in the field of metaproteomics and metabolomics
code digit 152/2011
The position is integrated in the subproject ‘Elucidation of anaerobic benzene and alkylated aromatic compound degradation pathways and associated proteins by proteomic and metabolomic analyses’.
The project aims to detect key proteins and metabolites involved in anaerobic benzene and alkylated compound degradation. Methods used will include anaerobic cultivation, protein preparation and LC-MS/MS analyses of proteins (LTQ Orbitrap MS). The detection of the active species and the catabolic enzymes in enrichment cultures will be carried out by Protein-Stable Isotope Probing (Protein-SIP) experiments (Jehmlich et al., 2010, Nature Protocols, 5,1957-1966). A total metabolomic screening of the culture as well as specific CoA-Ester identifications will be performed by Q-TOF MS or LTQ Orbitrap MS.
The project is embedded into the DFG priority program 1319 in which several projects of international experts in the field of microbial anaerobic degradation of hydrocarbons are integrated. Within the priority program multiple intra- and interdisciplinary co-operations are planned. The PhD student will participate in the UFZ Graduate School HIGRADE (www.ufz.de/index.php?en=11429) offering a wide range of additional opportunities.
We seek a highly motivated creative person with interests in biochemistry, (anaerobic) microbiology, proteomics and metabolomics. Candidates should have a Diploma or MSc certification in the area of microbiology or biochemistry. Due to the international character of the project, excellent English communication skills are expected. We provide excellent instrumentation and integration in a young international team.
